Formed in Los Angeles in 1981 around James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, Metallica turned the speed of the underground into something durable enough for stadiums. Across four decades the band has moved from raw thrash to arena-scaled heavy metal without ever surrendering the rhythm guitar as its centre of gravity.
